Starboard, a digital media company has bought Parler, a social media platform that is popular with conservatives in the U.S. The conglomerate has not disclosed the amount paid for the acquisition but has mentioned a temporary shutdown of the app. It will launch a new version of the social media platform. Earlier, celebrity Kanye West, who is now called Ye, had planned to acquire the social media platform’s parent company called Parlement Technologies, but the deal fell through due to unknown reasons.
According to a report on the Parler site, Starboard described itself as “the perfect home for the Parler brand and its longtime loyal users.” Ryan Coyne , the founder of Starboard, formerly known as Olympic Media, also said that the company was looking forward to integrating Parler’s users on their existing platforms. The Arlington Virginia based company was founded by Ryan Coyne as Olympic Media in 2018.

Starboard also mentioned that it expects to finalize the deal with Parler by the end of the second quarter in 2023. However, it said that the “terms of acquisition are not being disclosed.”
In the report on the site Starboard also said that it would start providing services for online communities that are unsupported and would build a home for these communities that was different from “the ad-hoc regulatory hand of platforms that hate them.”
Parler was among several platforms that designated themselves as free-speech alternative platforms to Twitter, before it was acquired by Elon Musk for $44 billion, late last year. Other platforms that consider themselves as free speech alternatives include Gettr, Gab and Truth Social.
In September 2022, Parler announced a restructuring exercise. It also bought a private cloud services company called Dynascale Inc. that is based in Irvine, California. The app was temporarily removed from Google’s Play Store and Apple Inc.’s App Store after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. However, it was later restored by both the online stores.
