Stanley cups became viral on social media as a symbol of clean living. The cups are a sustainable way to decrease the amount of plastic used for beverages. However, the rainbow-colored cups that were once a must-have thing in many American families are now viral as they contain small amounts of lead. The manufacturer said there would be rare exposure if the base cap came off. Information can be toxic at negligible levels, and there is no safe level for children.

Pacific Market International, the manufacturer of Stanley Cups, confirmed that there is some lead in the “sealing material” used but says that the sealed area “is covered with a durable stainless steel layer” that makes it “inaccessible to consumers.”

The company statement also assures its customers that lead is not present “on the surface of any Stanley product that comes into contact with the consumer nor the contents of the product.”

A statement from Stanley also said that its cup is eligible for replacement under the company’s lifetime warranty if the “base cap of a Stanley cup does come off and exposes the seal,” the statement says it “is rare.”

Stanley says on its website that its “items comply with Prop 65 and FDA requirements.” However, experts believe there should be no way a cup should face even accidental exposure to lead. It would be preferable if information is not used in the manufacturing process.
