Spurs C Charles Bassey out for season with knee injury

San Antonio Spurs center Charles Bassey will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, the team announced Tuesday.

An MRI conducted on Monday revealed that Bassey, 23, tore his left anterior cruciate ligament, an injury that happened Sunday while Bassey was on assignment with the G League’s Austin Spurs against the Texas Legends in Dallas.

The team provided no further details or comments.

Bassey appeared in 19 straight games (zero starts) and averaged 3.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 10.8 minutes per game before being sent to the G league in early December to get more consistent playing time.

Bassey is familiar with this season’s fate, having also ended last season early with a knee injury. A fractured left patella in March forced Bassey to sit for the remainder of that season.

Just prior to that, in February, the Spurs had converted Bassey’s two-way contract into a regular NBA contract worth $10.2 million over four seasons.

Bassey played 23 games in 2021-22 with the Philadelphia 76ers, who selected the 6-foot-10, 230-pounder out of Western Kentucky in the second round of the 2021 draft.

He has averages of 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 77 career games (two starts).
