Speaker McCarthy responds ‘I’ll survive’ after fellow Republican says ousting him remains an option

On Sunday, Florida far-right Republican Representative Matt Gaetz said that efforts are on to oust his party’s House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The top GOP leader relied on Democrat counterparts to narrowly avoid a government shutdown, which did not sit well with far-right Republicans, including Gaetz. The U.S. government will continue to function until November 17 after a bipartisan short-term funding bill was passed on Saturday.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy appeared in an interview on Sunday on Face the Nation. He appeared confident that he would maintain his post despite rumblings from far-right Republicans, especially Mark Gaetz, who said that efforts were on to oust him.

McCarthy said, “I’ll survive.” He mentioned that Gaetz’s challenge was “personal” and added that the Representative from Florida was “more interested in securing TV interviews.”

He also said, “Let’s get over with it. Let’s start governing.”

He added that he had made sure that the government had not shut down, and if Gaetz was upset about this matter and he tried to push them into a shutdown, then he felt, “Let’s have that talk.”

On Sunday, Republican Matt Gaetz told CNN’s State of the Union that he intended to file a motion “to vacate against Speaker McCarthy this week.” He said they needed “to rip off the Band-Aid” and “new leadership” and more.

McCarthy believes that he handled the difficult situation of the U.S. government shutdown with a short-term measure as well as possible. He had a hard-hitting message for those against him and dared them to “bring it on.”

Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, who is on the House Problem Solvers Caucus, believes that McCarthy could survive an attempt to oust him from the role of leader and wants the rules changed if Gaetz continues to bring a motion to vacate.
