The latest South Park special, *The End of Obesity*, now streaming on Paramount+ UK & Ireland, tackles the weighty issue of new weight loss drugs with typical South Park irreverence and sharp wit.
The story kicks off with Eric Cartman and his mother, Liane, visiting the doctor to address Cartman’s weight issues. Refusing to entertain the idea of exercise, Cartman is thrilled to learn about the weight loss potential of a drug called Ozempic. In classic Cartman fashion, he immediately fantasizes about a life where he can freely insult anyone, even those in Pakistan, without being ridiculed for his obesity. However, his excitement is quickly deflated when they discover that the drug isn’t covered by insurance for weight loss purposes, making it unaffordable for them.
Sensing Cartman’s desperation, Butters Stotch and Kyle Broflovski help. Their journey takes them to the local insurance company, where they encounter a frustratingly outdated receptionist and navigate the convoluted American healthcare system. Despite their best efforts, they can’t secure Ozempic for Cartman. Undeterred, the kids decide to take matters into their own hands, turning to TikTok for DIY solutions.
Meanwhile, in a hilarious subplot, Randy Marsh tries to embarrass his daughter, Shelley, by picking her up from school wearing one of her crop tops. This coincides with a trend among the town’s moms, who have been flaunting their newly slimmed waists thanks to various semaglutide drugs, proudly exposing their midriffs.
*South Park: The End of Obesity* is a biting satire on modern healthcare and societal obsessions with body image. The episode brilliantly weaves together the absurdity of the American insurance system, the influence of social media, and the extremes people go to in the name of vanity. The humor is as crude and boundary-pushing as ever, ensuring that fans of the series will find plenty to laugh at while reflecting on the underlying social commentary.
This movie is a “Web Fans” must-see.
