Sony has a new box office all time domestic title in the U.S. not adjusted for inflation. It is is the mildly underestimated “Spider-Man: No Way Home” that has created this record in what can still be considered as pandemic times. The Sony and Marvel’s superhero brought in $19.7 million on Christmas Eve and earned $405.5 million in domestic sales after Friday shows. Earlier, in 2017, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle had earned $404.5 million.

The latest Spidey sensation is also doing well, overseas. It has crossed $1 billion in worldwide sales and this is a pandemic first as no movie has crossed the billion mark since the start of the pandemic. The milestone of $1.05 billion has been reached on Christmas weekend. Earlier, it had already crossed $900 million.

Sony Pictures and Marvel’s Cinematic Universe entered a partnership that allowed Spider-Man that was owned by Sony, to appear in the Marvel Universe. This agreement resulted in Marvel getting involved in solo projects of Spider-Man as well as his appearances in Marvel films. This has been a big gain for both Sony and Marvel.

Tom Holland is the latest Spiderman a.k.a Peter Parker. This is his sixth appearance in Marvel Cinematic Universe films. He has featured in three solo films. This new film might be the biggest grosser in his entire film career, to date.

Other pictures that have crossed the $1 billion mark include the following:

Avengers: Endgame in 5 days
Avengers: Infinity War in 11 days
Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 12 days.

Christmas Week has seen a plethora of releases. Sing 2 from Universal and Illumination is doing well and is estimated to post a 5-day opening of roughly $40 million. The animated family film opened on Wednesday. Other openings on the same day including The Matrix Resurrections and The King’s Man are struggling at the Box Office, although Matrix is also streaming on HBO Max. However, the Christmas week blockbuster is undoubtedly Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
