Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) is an action-packed adventure-comedy film based on the beloved video game franchise. Directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, this third installment in the Sonic series continues the high-energy fun.

By March 2024, the movie had wrapped production. Drawing inspiration from the video games *Sonic Adventure 2* (2001) and *Shadow the Hedgehog* (2005), the film introduces Reeves’ Shadow, whose intense and brooding character parallels the actor’s iconic *John Wick* performances.
The film opens in 1974, when a meteorite crashes in Oklahoma, carrying an alien hedgehog, Shadow. Seized by the military, Shadow is subjected to experiments by Professor Gerald Robotnik at a G.U.N. facility. Despite the harsh environment, Shadow bonds with Gerald’s granddaughter, Maria. During an escape attempt, tragedy strikes as Maria is killed in an explosion, leading to Gerald’s imprisonment and Shadow’s suspension in stasis.
Fast forward 50 years, and Shadow is released by a mysterious hacker. Meanwhile, in Green Hills, Montana, Sonic celebrates his Earth anniversary with Tails, Knuckles, and his adoptive family, the Wachowskis. G.U.N. Director Rockwell recruits “Team Sonic” to stop Shadow’s destructive rampage in Tokyo. However, Shadow proves a powerful adversary, besting the trio and escaping, setting the stage for an epic showdown.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 premiered at the Empire Leicester Square in London on December 10, 2024, before its wide release in the United States on December 20. Critics and audiences praised the film for its thrilling action sequences, heartfelt moments, and standout performances, particularly from Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves. The film has grossed $338.2 million worldwide on a $122 million budget, solidifying its status as a box office success. With a fourth film already in development, the Sonic cinematic universe shows no signs of slowing down.
