“Something in the Water” dives into the deep end of the shark thriller genre, but unfortunately, it struggles to stay afloat amidst familiar waters. Director Hayley Easton Street’s debut feature takes audiences on a journey to a dream destination wedding in the Caribbean, where five friends soon find themselves plunged into a fight for survival against menacing sharks.
From the outset, it’s clear that “Something in the Water” follows the well-trodden path of its predecessors. The formulaic setup, where a tranquil ocean backdrop quickly transforms into a battleground for humans versus sharks, feels all too familiar. While Street attempts to inject some side drama into the narrative, the characters’ one-dimensional nature and superficial relationships fail to captivate.
The ensemble cast, led by Hiftu Quasem as Meg, Nicole Rieko Setsuko as the hyperactive Cam, Ellouise Shakespeare-Hart as the thoughtful Ruth, and Natalie Mitson as the conflicted Kayla, do their best to infuse life into their roles. However, they are hindered by underdeveloped characters lacking depth and distinction. Despite attempts to create tension between Meg and Kayla stemming from past trauma, the emotional impact feels shallow and fails to resonate with the audience.
Visually, the film benefits from its picturesque Caribbean setting, with stunning beachside landscapes as a tranquil backdrop and a foreboding battleground. However, even the most breathtaking scenery can’t compensate for the lack of substance in the storyline and characters.
Ultimately, “Something in the Water” struggles to distinguish itself from the countless shark thrillers that have come before it. While it may offer a fleeting thrill for fans of the genre, its shallow characterizations and predictable plot prevent it from making a lasting impression.
