Sky open hectic stretch with matinee vs. Dream

Wednesday’s matinee against the visiting Atlanta Dream begins a stretch of three games in four days for the Chicago Sky.

While former Dream lottery pick Chennedy Carter has emerged as the leading scorer for Chicago (8-12), the biggest buzz surrounding the Sky is for rookie forward Angel Reese.

Reese had 17 points and 14 rebounds during Sunday’s 84-71 loss at Seattle, giving her a double-double in a WNBA-record 13 straight games.

Reese started the streak against New York on June 4 and since has notched a pair of double-doubles versus the Dream. She contributed 13 points and 13 boards in a home loss on June 8 and had 12 points and a career-best 19 rebounds in the Sky’s 85-77 win in Atlanta on July 2.

“I’m not satisfied with where I’m at,” said Reese, who averages 14.1 points and 11.9 rebounds. “I have coaches and teammates around me that believe in me, trust me, and I just continue to trust the process of everything.”

Chicago won two of three on a road trip to Atlanta and Seattle. Carter led the way with 21 points in Sunday’s loss to the Storm.

Atlanta (7-13) has lost four in a row and seven of eight. Sunday’s 80-67 road loss to the Connecticut Sun was the most lopsided of the current skid.

Allisha Gray (19 points), Tina Charles (13) and Nia Coffey (11) scored in double figures for short-handed Atlanta.

Injuries continue to hamper the Dream. Second-leading scorer Rhyne Howard, who averages 15.4 points a game, hasn’t played since June 19 as she works through a left ankle injury.

Jordin Canada (finger), Cheyenne Parker-Tyus (foot) and Aerial Powers (calf) also missed the game against Connecticut.

“Next man up mentality,” Dream coach Tanisha Wright said. “We have a team for a reason. Everybody that’s on our roster is here for a reason. We believe that they can play, obviously. So now it’s just somebody else’s opportunity to step up and have the opportunity to show what they can do.”
