Six former Phillies died from the same brain cancer possibly due to fields turf. This Thursday, the Philadelphia Inquirer published an article on the harmful chemicals infused in Veterans Stadium’s turf. Part of this report was inspired by the discovery that six former Phillies players all passed away from the same uncommon brain disease.
Glioblastoma, a deadly brain disease, claimed the lives of six former Phillies who played at the Vet, which housed the Phillies and the Eagles from 1971 to 2003. Darren Daulton, David West, John Vukovich, John Oates, Ken Brett, and Tug McGraw are well-known to Philadelphia baseball fans who grew up during that ill-fated golden era.
The Veterans Stadium had chemicals in the synthetic turf, the AstroTurf, which had been touted as a cutting-edge scientific marvel at one point, were known to cause cancer and other harmful effects. The “forever” compounds known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, generally referred to as PFAS. These toxins are already well-known in the Philadelphia region and are causing controversy in towns around the nation.

Veterans Stadium and baseball players are linked to more than simply brain cancer. After Daulton’s initial diagnosis, a 2013 study was conducted that looked at 533 Phillies who participated in the Vet. According to the study, this group had a three times higher cancer rate than the average American male.
The umbrella name for all of these compounds, PFAS, is not brand-new. They have been used to create water- and heat-resistant goods like cookware, carpets, furniture textiles, and more since the 1940s. For their use in firefighting foams, which have seeped into groundwater in numerous locations, including at the Naval Air Station Willow Grove in Montgomery County, they are arguably best recognized among health and environmental activists.
