In a landmark ruling, Robert A. Hadden, a former Manhattan gynecologist, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting four of his patients. The sentencing took place after two days of hearings in front of Judge Richard M. Berman, who ordered Hadden to serve the statutory maximum of two decades concurrently for each of the four charges. After his incarceration, he will be on a lifetime of supervised release.
The federal charges concerned with assaults against four patients who had traveled from and through different states for gynecological and obstetrics appointments. The charges were announced against Hadden in September 2020, and at a hearing held last month, there were several brave women who shared how the assaults had deeply affected them over the decades.
Laurie Kanyok, one of the victims who reported Hadden to the police in 2012, expressed her relief at the sentencing. She stated that the system had taken more than 10 years to bring justice, and that she had spoken several times in court, and hoped this would be “the last time.”
Apart from facing imprisonment, Hadden’s actions have also led to significant financial repercussions for his former employers. Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital were sued by victims, resulting in two separate settlements amounting to approximately $236 million for 226 former patients.
Judge Berman, while delivering the sentence, remarked that the severity of Hadden’s offenses called for appropriate punishment and deterrence. Throughout the sentencing hearing, the judge carefully considered objections raised by Hadden’s lawyers. He emphasized that Hadden’s actions were “lewd, serious, unchecked, out of control.” The sentencing brought closure to a decades-long saga that began in the early 1990s, with prosecutors asserting that Hadden abused numerous patients during medical exams.
In 2012, Hadden was initially arrested, but a plea deal struck with the Manhattan district attorney’s office resulted in him avoiding prison time by surrendering his medical license and pleading guilty to reduced charges. However, renewed attention to the case, including accusations from Evelyn Yang, the wife of former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, prompted the opening of a new investigation, leading to the federal charges in 2020.
The sentencing of Robert A. Hadden sends a strong message about the importance of accountability and justice in cases of sexual assault.
