Nikko Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar, a popular restaurant in Pace, Florida, found itself entangled in a disturbing investigation after seven customers were reportedly poisoned on its premises in June. Samples of the food from the restaurant were found to contain narcotics, albeit it was unclear what kind of drugs were present. As a result, the restaurant was forced to shut down its operations on July 7, leaving its loyal customers in dismay.
The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office (SRSO) initiated the investigation on June 10 when multiple patrons fell ill after dining at the establishment. Despite the alarming findings, the authorities stated that they would not pursue criminal charges against any of the restaurant employees, as there was insufficient evidence to suggest any intentional wrongdoing. The Department of Business and Professional Regulations and the SRSO Major Crimes Unit are collaborating on these investigations. An impartial investigation is being carried out by the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco.
The ordeal began when patrons Brandon and Jordan Gray, accompanied by their friend Matthew Gilley, visited Nikko for a hibachi table experience. The couple and their friend reported feeling normal during the dinner, except for the chef’s recommendation to try the ‘sweet soy sauce.’ This seemingly innocent suggestion later led to distressing consequences.
As the night wore on, the Grays and their friend experienced alarming symptoms, including racing hearts and insomnia. Realizing something was amiss, Brandon reached out to a police officer friend for advice, only to discover that another family had been admitted to the emergency room with similar symptoms after dining at Nikko that same night.

Despite the subsequent closure and investigation, Nikko’s management staunchly denied any responsibility for the poisonings. The restaurant temporarily closed during the investigation and later reopened, believing they would be exonerated from the allegations. However, the accusations had taken a toll on their reputation, leading to relentless harassment from the public, driven largely by social media.
The incident has been a devastating blow for Nikko, a family-owned and operated business that has proudly served its customers for over a decade. The restaurant’s closure not only impacted on its dedicated staff of twenty employees, who suddenly found themselves unemployed, but also left the loyal web fan base disheartened and skeptical.
As the authorities continue their investigation, the closure of Nikko Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar stands as a reminder of the need for thorough investigations.
