Several Women File Suit Against Haircare Company Olaplex, Allege Products ‘Cause Hair Loss and Damage’

Popular haircare company Olaplex is being sued by about twenty-eight women, who claim that its products have led to hair loss, blisters, and other adverse conditions. The shampoos, conditioners, and treatments in the Olaplex line make the claim that they can “safely repair broken bonds and rejuvenate hair.” But according to the lawsuit, Olaplex contains dangerous chemicals that made women’s hair and scalps worse off.

The lawsuit also alleges that the company, which gained notoriety for promising to “bond-build” damaged hair, made false claims” about the effectiveness of its products and concealed that its formula comprised potentially harmful chemicals.

The CEO of the haircare brand Jue Wong responded to the lawsuit by defending the company and stating that she was “prepared to vigorously defend the company against baseless accusations,” in a video posted on social media. “Olaplex products do not cause hair loss or hair breakage,” she claimed.

In the wake of the lawsuit, Olaplex has not recalled any of its products. The lawyers claimed they carefully considered all potential contributing factors to the women’s hair loss and scalp issues but came to the conclusion that “the products alone are to blame.”

Olaplex, a company that was established in California in 2014, asserts that the restoration of damaged hair by its products’ patented chemistry is supported by science.

According to the lawsuit, “the hair has split and broken, making it look unkempt and as if it were cut with a weedwhacker.” The Law Centre of Amy E. Davis, one of the law firms involved in the case, has made public several images of the plaintiffs that they claim demonstrate bald spots brought on by Olaplex. According to the legal documents, the plaintiffs are collectively demanding $75,000 in damages.

In addition, the lawsuit asserts that Olaplex products contain the chemicals lilial and panthenol, which can cause skin conditions like “inflamed, blistered, flaking or scaling skin” and hair loss.

Before the European Union banned it in March 2022 due to its effect on fertility, liaial was once used as a perfume in cosmetics. The lawsuit contends that Olaplex is still marketing older products that still contain Illia, also known as butylphenyl methylpropional, despite Olaplex’s claim that it removed the ingredient from all of its products globally.

While the products have allegedly been endorsed by some celebrities, actress Kristin Cavallari has reportedly advised her fans to refrain from using Olaplex CAN, revealing that she had been using excessively and it has given her problems.
