In a superseding indictment, federal prosecutors have added new allegations against Senator Robert Menendez, accusing the New Jersey Democrat of acting as Egypt’s foreign agent.
The 69-year-old senator was accused of accepting bribes totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, including gold bars, designer goods, and about $500,000 in cash, all of which were found by investigators at the Menendez residence. Menendez was initially charged on a wide range of counts in September.
Menendez and his spouse Nadine filed a not-guilty plea last month.
These new accusations follow Menendez’s initial indictment for participating in a number of alleged schemes to use his political influence in exchange for bribes and pricey gifts, along with his wife Nadine Menendez and three New Jersey businesspeople.
The senator is charged with breaking the law prohibiting members of Congress from acting as foreign agents in a 44-page superseding indictment that was just made public and filed in federal court in Manhattan. It asserts that Menendez engaged in operations that involved giving the Egyptian government vital information while also acting covertly to further their objectives.
According to the prosecution, these payments were paid in exchange for Menendez’s participation in a number of corrupt schemes that were made possible by his roles as the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee and a U.S. senator. Some of these schemes were allegedly designed particularly to benefit the government of Egypt, and Menendez was accused of writing an anonymous letter pleading with his colleague’s legislators to send Egypt hundreds of millions of dollars in aid.
