National runner-up San Diego State and traditional power Gonzaga have agreed to a home-and-home series over the next two seasons.
The Aztecs and Bulldogs will play this season on Dec. 29 at on-campus McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, Wash. The following season, the teams will battle at Viejas Arena on the San Diego State campus. The date for the 2024-25 season matchup will be announced at a later time.
San Diego State’s program is at its highest elevation ever after advancing to last season’s NCAA Tournament title game. The Aztecs lost 76-59 to UConn. San Diego State (32-7 last season) had not previously advanced past the Sweet 16.
Gonzaga, which went 31-6 last season, was routed 82-54 by UConn in the Elite Eight. The Zags were national runner-ups in the 2017 and 2021 NCAA Tournaments.
The Aztecs and Bulldogs have split four previous meetings. San Diego State won the most recent meeting 72-70 during the 2017-18 season.
The Aztecs also defeated Gonzaga 79-76 in Spokane early in the 2010-11 season with a team featuring future NBA star Kawhi Leonard.
Gonzaga defeated San Diego State in the 1959-60 campaign at a neutral site in Portland and also defeated the Aztecs at home early in the 2014-15 season.
