In January, Samsung had teased its new wearable the Galaxy Ring at Galaxy Unpacked. On Monday, the South Korean tech giant released a prototype at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. Samsung said the ring would be available this year but did not mention a price. It has several health features. It will pair with a Samsung smartphone.
Hon Pak, the head of the digital health team at the South Korean tech company, said that the ring’s health-tracking features would include heart and respiratory rates. It would monitor the amount of movement made during sleep and the time it took for a person to fall asleep.
According to him, users can get a “vitality score.” This is obtained by collecting physical and mental readiness data and will show “how productive you can be.”
Pak also said that customers can get different health insights when they wear a Samsung Watch and a Samsung ring paired with a Samsung Smartphone and will be available on its Samsung Health app. He also said the Samsung Health app could become subscription-based after improving its capabilities.
Allison Johnson a reviewer posted first impressions on the ring by Samsung as she got hands-on time with it. A report in The Verge Johnson said it was “very light.” The tried prototypes were in “three colors: platinum silver, ceramic black, and gold.” It was offered in sizes ranging from 5 up to 13.
The reviewer said the Samsung Galaxy Ring would inform users about a new health metric called “My Vitality Score,” based on a model developed by the University of Georgia. This score would incorporate “sleep, activity, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability.”
The reviewer said that she was not allowed to take photos and that Samsung noted there could be changes in the final product compared to the prototype.
In 2020, the Oura ring was launched with several health features, and it is now available with additional features in Gen 3. Some of features include sleep monitoring, heart rate monitoring and more. This year, Samsung’s Galaxy Ring will compete with the Oura ring and other wearables.
