Samsung Electronics announced the launch of a new generative artificial intelligence model on Wednesday. It suggested that all its devices would soon carry the software. It named its technology Samsung Gauss and said that it has been designed for future AI applications on its devices.
Samsung said that it had named its AI model after mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss who was the legend who had “established normal distribution theory, the backbone of machine learning and AI.”
The electronics giant said that its AI model was currently being used by its employees and that the technology would be further expanded by Samsung to include its use in devices manufactured by the company. This could mean that Samsung smartphones, laptops and other devices would be able to use Gauss in future.
Apple Inc., the largest rival of Samsung has not yet announced the launch of a generative AI model. During an Apple earnings call in October, CEO Tim Cook said that the company was working on generative AI but did not provide details.
Samsung Research has developed Samsung Gauss. It has three tools:
Samsung Gauss Language
Samsung Gauss Code and
Samsung Gauss Image.
As its name suggests Samsung Gauss Language is able to understand human language and will answer questions similar to ChatGPT. It can help write emails, summarize documents and translate well but the languages it can translate to and from is not known, as yet.
Developers will be able to write code quickly with the help of Samsung Gauss Code as the AI model will offer support “through an interactive interface.”
As its name suggests Samsung Gauss Image will help in image generation as well as with editing features that may help in sharpening images, changing resolutions and more.
Microsoft funded Open AI’s ChatGPT became a pioneer in developing generative AI. It was followed by models developed by Google, Meta, Anthropic and others. Samsung seems to be the first large smartphone maker to develop its own generative AI model called Gauss, and Samsung may become the first brand to offer its own software in its smartphones and other devices.
