Jair Bolsonaro, the outgoing Brazilian president, arrived in Florida on Friday after delivering a tearful message to his supporters less than two days before his fierce leftist rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva takes office.
Jair Bolsanaro’s legal immunity from prosecution will expire on Monday, when his bitter rival is re-elected.
FlightAware, a website that monitors air traffic, reported that the presidential plane took off from Brasilia shortly after 2 p.m. local time, bound for Orlando, Florida.
‘I am in flight and will return soon,’ Bolsonaro was quoted as saying by CNN Brasil. A request for comment from his press office was not returned.
The US State Department did not respond immediately to a request for comment. Questions about Jair Bolsonaro’s visit were directed to the Brazilian president’s office by the US embassy in Brasilia.
Jair Bolsonaro, on the other hand, praised protesters who have been camped out in front of army barracks across the country, urging the military to stage a coup.
‘I did not encourage anyone to engage in conflict,’ he said, adding that his supporters were only looking for ‘freedom.’ He claimed that the protests were ‘spontaneous,’ with no leadership or coordination.
