Simon Greene (James Nesbit) is a successful, normal family man whose life is upended when his adult daughter, Paige (Ellie de Lange) vanishes into a world of drugs and street living. After he tracks her down in a park, strung out and accompanied by a volatile young man named Aaron Corval (Thomas Flynn), a public confrontation erupts and goes viral. Soon after, Aaron is found murdered, and Simon becomes entangled in the investigation while still trying to bring Paige home.
In an effort to find Paige and to prove his innocence, Simon investigates as much as he can about Aaron and the unlawful gangland in which he was presumably involved. This leads to Ash (Jon Pointing) and DeeDee (Maeve Courtier-Lillie), who seem to be killing people at random, which eventually points to a secretive organization somehow implicated with Aaron’s prior life. Along the way he teams up with an investigator, Ruth (Elena Ravenscroft) who is working on a related missing‑persons case, and their paths repeatedly cross as bodies pile up and the stakes escalate.
Directed by Nimer Rashed (5 episodes) and Isher Sahota (3 episodes) and written by Daniel Brockilehurst, Charlotte Coben, Tom Farrelly, and Amanda Duke, from a novel by Harlan Coben, this is a convoluted tale because we don’t know why Ash and DeeDee are killing people and how they might be involved with the missing Paige. We are witnessing the tale through Simon’s eyes as he wades deeper and deeper into the mystery. Also involved are a couple of police detectives, Isaac Fagbenle, played by Alfred Enoch, and Detective Ruby Todd, played by Amy Gledhill. They originally think that Simon is involved in the murder of Aaron, who Simon assumes is Paige’s boyfriend, because of the widely seen video of Simon attacking Aaron.
‘Nuf said, this is a wonderfully complex tale that kept me involved up to the end.
