Rudy Giuliani filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New York days after losing a civil lawsuit for defaming two election workers in Georgia. The former Trump lawyer has listed debts including those owed to the IRS, unpaid legal fees as well as the $146 million judgment he has to pay the election workers. The Thursday filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan gives the former Mayor of New York City a legal pause.
A jury verdict last week awarded election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss monetary damages amounting to $146 million. Giuliani was ordered to start paying them and he filed for bankruptcy days later. Giuliani had represented Donald Trump in his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential elections. Giuliani had falsely accused two election workers in Georgia of ballot fraud. They received death threats and more after the false accusations.
In a Thursday statement, Heath Berger and Gary Fischoff lawyers for Giuliani said, “No person could have reasonably believed that Mayor Giuliani would be able to pay such a high punitive amount.”
In a statement following the statement by Giuliani’s spokesman, the attorney for the Georgia election workers Michael Gottlieb said, “This maneuver is unsurprising, and it will not succeed in discharging Mr. Giuliani’s debt to Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss.”
According to the court filing, Giuliani’s assets have been estimated to be at a value between $1 million and $10 million. The filing lists his actual debts, as of now at $151.8 million. The debts include the defamation judgment of $146 million, roughly $1 million to the IRS, and several million dollars to several law firms, including $1.36 million to former lawyer Robert Castello.
He is also being sued by others including Dominion and Smartmatic election machine manufacturing companies, former employee Noelle Dunphy for sexual harassment, and other cases including an indictment in Georgia court on charges such as racketeering and conspiracy.
