U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently met with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele during his multi-day visit to Central and South America. During their meeting, Secretary Rubio noted that President Bukele extended a gesture of friendship and proposed housing dangerous criminals deported from the United States in El Salvador’s mega-prison. President Bukele clarified that his country would only accept convicted criminals and would detain them in their mega-prison facilities in exchange for a fee.
Secretary Rubio expressed deep gratitude to President Bukele, stating that no other nation had ever offered such a gesture of friendship to the United States. He also mentioned that El Salvador is open to accepting deported immigrants as well as criminals of any nationality, including members of notorious gangs like MS-13 or Tren de Aragua.
President Bukele confirmed the agreement on social media, posting on Elon Musk’s platform X: “We are willing to take in only convicted criminals (including convicted U.S. citizens) into our mega-prison (CECOT) in exchange for a fee.” He explained that while the fee would be a modest amount for the U.S., it would be significant for El Salvador, helping to sustain the country’s prison system.
As previously reported by CWEB, El Salvador constructed a massive prison known as CECOT (Terrorism Confinement Center), which can hold up to 40,000 inmates.
The facility has been a cornerstone of President Bukele’s tough-on-crime policies, which have drawn criticism from human rights organizations like Amnesty International. These groups have raised concerns about the treatment of prisoners in El Salvador’s jails.
Despite the criticism, President Bukele’s approach has garnered widespread support among Salvadoran citizens, many of whom feel safer following the crackdown on gang violence. In February 2024, Bukele secured a second term as president with over 84% of the vote, reflecting his popularity and the public’s approval of his hardline stance on crime.
