Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis has long been considered as the most formidable rival against former President Donald Trump in polls conducted by reputed agencies as well as in straw polls. A recent poll, conducted after Trump had dinner with Kanye West, who has recently been spewing a lot of antisemitic comments and Nick Fuentes, who is a white supremacist, shows that Ron DeSantis is closing the gap between him and Trump.
Yahoo News and YouGov recently conducted a poll from December 1 through December 5. The numbers polled showed that Trump was leading by 35 percent while DeSantis had 30 percent from Republicans and independents who leant towards the GOP.
A smaller group of registered voters narrowed the gap considerably with the Florida Governor trailing behind by only two points as 33 percent. Two other Republican hopefuls, former Vice President Mike Pence and former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, were far behind with only 5 percent.
Donald Trump has also lost points in the “most favorable” view. In June 2022, a majority of 53 percent of those polled had this view of the former president but that number has now dropped to 42 percent.
On November 15, Donald Trump formally announced his candidacy for president of the United States in 2024, at Mar-A-Lago, in Florida. The announcement came a week after the alleged red wave was more of a flat fall as the GOP gained a slim majority in the House, while they couldn’t wrest the Senate away from the Democrats in the November midterms.
Many high profile candidates, who had been strongly endorsed by Trump including Dr. Mehmet Oz, Herschel Walker and others, lost. Some of the so called election deniers also lost their elections. Trump has also lost some support from his former major donors. Fans are watching on both sides.
On the other hand, Ron DeSantis won the gubernatorial elections in Florida with a huge lead. The GOP also turned the state red by winning many seats as well as other elected positions. DeSantis has become the new winning face of the party with his recent victory, his conservative values and to some extent, his lack of drama. Many Republican want a return to time tested conservative values and governance after the tumultuous administration of Donald Trump and recent disturbing events such as him hosting Kanye West and Nick Fuentes, facing several criminal and civil investigations and more.
