Richard Carapaz became the first rider from Ecuador to win a stage at the Tour de France on Wednesday with his victory in the mountainous Stage 17.
The 31-year-old Olympic gold medalist finished the 178-kilometer journey from Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux to SuperDevoluy 37 seconds ahead of Britain’s Simon Yates. Spain’s Enric Mas placed third.
Carapaz added to his list of accomplishments that includes winning the 2019 Giro d’Italia and capturing the gold medal in the road race at the Tokyo Olympics in July 2021.
Two-time champion Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia retained the yellow jersey as the race’s overall leader.
The Tour de France continues Thursday with Stage 18, a hilly 179.5-kilometer trek from Gap to Barcelonnette.
