Richard Belzer, the ‘Law & Order SVU’ actor, has passed away at age 78. According to his manager, Eric Gardner, Belzer “passed away peacefully” early on Sunday morning local time at his residence in France.
Richard Belzer, the actor and comedian, got his start in stand-up comedy. In the 1970s, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, and John Belushi were among the comedians with whom Belzer shared a stage in New York as he started his stand-up career. They were all guests on The National Lampoon Show. He later became the host of the comedic chat show Hot Properties when Hulk Hogan famously put Belzer in a front chin lock to defend the “truth” of wrestling. Belzer banged his head and needed stitches after collapsing. He asserted a claim in a lawsuit, and a settlement was eventually reached.
Belzer broke into the mainstream with his performances on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. His character, police detective John Munch, became instantly recognizable. From 1999 and 2016, he made 326 appearances as a series regular. His character retired in 2013, but he made a comeback in two more episodes.

Belzer, like his fictional counterpart, was fascinated by conspiracy theories. He wrote four books, two of which were New York Times bestsellers, about what he called “controversial cover-ups.” Belzer also appeared on the television shows Sesame Street and 30 Rock.
