Rhode Island head coach Archie Miller dismissed second-leading scorer Brayon Freeman from the team.

No reason was given for the dismissal of the sophomore guard. In a press release, Miller referenced supporting Freeman’s “academics, health and wellness.”

Freeman was averaging 14.3 points per game and leading the Rams with 2.8 assists in 23 games (19 starts) this season. Freeman scored 11 points and had two steals in Saturday’s loss to George Mason.

“He’s no longer with us and we’re going to do everything we can to support his finish here at the university,” Miller said at a press conference Monday. “I’ll kind of leave it at that. As you go through the grind of a season, there’s a lot of ups and downs that (happen). In most cases, you’re living day to day. But in a big-picture standpoint, it’s the right move for us.”

Rhode Island is 8-16 overall and in 12th place in the Atlantic-10 standings with a 4-8 mark in Miller’s first season. The Rams host VCU on Wednesday.

Freeman transferred to URI from George Washington, where he averaged 10.3 points and 3.7 assists in 30 games (16 starts) as a freshman.
