Retired federal judge Maryanne Trump Barry died early Monday morning in her Manhattan home, according to several sources, although there has been no official confirmation, as yet. The elder sister of former president Donald Trump was 86 years old. She was both a supporter and a critic of Trump.
Sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the police were called to a home, early Monday morning. It has been reported that emergency crews responded to a call that said that an elderly person was in cardiac arrest. It also said that there were no signs of foul play or of trauma. Donald Trump has not as yet commented on the report of the death of his elder sister Maryanne Trump Barry.
Judge Barry was on the bench in New Jersey in 1983, as a federal district judge. A Republican, she began her judicial career under the Reagan administration after reportedly getting help from Roy M. Cohn, who is considered to be a fixer for Donald Trump. She was elevated to the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit based in Philadelphia by the Clinton administration in 1993.
Maryanne Trump Barry voluntarily retired in April 2019 after becoming the focus of a court investigating that took place after the New York Times reported on the tax problems of the Trump family, in 2018. The civil misconduct investigation against her was reportedly dropped after she retired. She was said to be a tough judge.
Maryanne Trump Barry was said to be both protective and critical of her brother Donald Trump. She had criticized him in private conversations in 2018 and 2019 with their niece Mary L. Trump who released these recordings through the Washington Post. Earlier, Donald Trump considered his elder sister to be his confidante but was upset with her after her harsh criticism of him became public knowledge.
Maryanne Barry is the third among four siblings of Donald Trump who have passed away. Donald Trump has one surviving sister—Elizabeth Trump Grau. She is 81-years old and is a former banker. Maryanne Trump Barry is also survived by a son David William Desmond, a New York based psychologist, from her first marriage with David Desmond in 1960.
