Sears, a large American retailer, filed for bankruptcy in 2018. Many stores were shuttered, and it was thought that the brand had disappeared. However, the recent opening of two stores, one in Burbank, California, and the other in Union Gap Washington, led to speculation from experts on the reasons behind these openings and whether more brick-and-mortar stores are expected to open shortly.
One theory about the opening of these stores is that the erstwhile department chain is making a quiet comeback. Sears has been a pioneer in introducing a Sears catalog. It changed the way Americans shopped, as they could choose items from anywhere and not necessarily from a store close to them. The mail-order catalog was the pioneer of online shopping. Later, Sears began developing products under its brands as well.
Another theory on the reopening of Sears stores is that Transformco, the owner of Sears, has not found retail tenants for its stores in several locations. So, the parent is reopening stores instead of keeping the retail space idle.
In 2005 two giant retailers, Sears and Kmart merged. The retail combination had almost 3.500 stores. This is among the highest number of stores in the nation by one retailer. The only comparable giant retailer is Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer.
Due to various steps of mismanagement, the giant retailer ended up filing for bankruptcy in 2018 and though it is out of it, the brand has almost become obsolete and irrelevant. However, the brand value might remain if Transformco puts in efforts to draw in customers not just for nostalgia but also to seriously shop in its stores as consumers are back at shopping at brick-and-mortar stores.
Sears currently has less than 20 retail stores. Parent Transformco has not responded when asked for comment on the reopening of two stores these past months, nor has it confirmed the number of Sears stores that are open in the U.S.
