The Mountain West informed San Diego State Friday that it will not approve exceptions the university requested when it gave notice of its desire to resign its conference membership, ESPN reported Monday.
Following multiple media reports Friday that San Diego State planned to leave the Mountain West, school communications official Jamie McConeghy said San Diego State had not sent a resignation letter and has until the end of the month to take that action officially.
The school had requested a “one-month extension given unforeseen delays involving other collegiate athletic conferences beyond our control,” ESPN reported. San Diego State also requested a reduced exit fee or a payment plan.
Per Monday’s report, the Mountain West denied those requests.
San Diego State needs to give the league one year’s notice in order to withdraw next June. If it waits beyond June 30, the exit fee jumps from $16.5 million to nearly $34 million, reports said.
San Diego State has been linked to the Pac-12, and the Big 12 is reportedly researching potential expansion options, but there are no known offers on the table for the Aztecs.
The program’s national profile reached a new peak in April when the Aztecs advanced to the NCAA men’s basketball championship game, losing to UConn.
