The world of cinema has lost a true legend as Oscar-nominated actor Burt Young, famous for his unforgettable portrayal of Paulie Pennino in the ‘Rocky’ film series, passed away at the age of 83. With a career spanning over six decades, Young’s remarkable talent left an indelible mark on the world of acting and a lasting legacy for generations of film enthusiasts. In this article, we will celebrate the life and career of this iconic actor who will forever be remembered as the lovable and gruff brother-in-law of the Italian Stallion.
Born on April 30, 1940, in Queens, New York, as Gerald Tommaso DeLouise, Burt Young’s early life was far from glamorous. He overcame many hardships, including a turbulent childhood and time spent in the Marine Corps, before pursuing his passion for acting. Young was drawn to the theater, where he honed his craft and developed the gritty authenticity that would later define his performances.
Ten Oscar nominations for “Rocky” were made, with Young receiving the best supporting actor nomination. It received three awards, including best picture. Young and Burgess Meredith, who both received nominations, came in second place to Jason Robards in “All the President’s Men.”
Burt Young continued to play Paulie in all of the future “Rocky” movies, playing a crucial role in the series’ long-lasting success. Young’s portrayal of Paulie allowed him to explore the character’s changing demeanor, from being Rocky’s devoted sidekick to his battles with alcohol and inner demons. The ‘Rocky’ series became much more than just a boxing tale because of its legendary one-liners and touching scenes, which provided humor and depth.
Additionally, Young starred in the 1986 comedy “Back to School” with Rodney Dangerfield, the gritty drama “Last Exit to Brooklyn” with Jennifer Jason Leigh, and the 1984 gangster epic “Once Upon a Time in America” with Robert De Niro.
And no one can forget his portrayal as Bobby Baccalieri, Sr., an old mafioso with lung cancer who pulls off one more hit before having a coughing fit that causes him to die in a car accident, in a memorable appearance in season three of “The Sopranos” in 2001.
Young leaves behind a daughter, a grandchild, and his brother Robert. Gloria, his 13-year-old wife, passed away in 1974.
