The family of Reeva Steenkamp, the South African model who was murdered by her boyfriend in 2013, has shared details of a shocking prison cell encounter with their daughter’s killer Oscar Pistorious for the first time. They also explained why they now think the Blade Runner killer should be kept in prison for life.
Barry and June Steenkamp said they initially forgave the athlete for killing their daughter in a statement on the tenth anniversary of her death. However, they told MailOnline that they are adamantly opposed to his early release because he refused to acknowledge to them that he intentionally shot his girlfriend. They said Oscar Pistorious’ refusal to acknowledge to them that he intentionally shot their daughter in South Africa prevented them from forgiving him.

In his home in Pretoria, South Africa, the former Paralympic sprinter fatally shot his girlfriend four times, claiming that he had mistaken her for a burglar. According to Reeva’s mother, her daughter was killed intentionally because she had ended her relationship with the athlete and was leaving him. Pistorius was revealed to be a gun enthusiast who owned 10 weapons, including an AK-47, and was known for his rage. The former Paralympic runner has completed half of the 13 years, 5 months of his term for the Valentine’s Day 2013 murder. If parole is granted, he might be able to leave in a few weeks.
Two years ago, Pistorius sent the Steenkamp a letter in which he begged for their forgiveness and expressed regret, but they now view his request with contempt. The length of the gunman’s 13-and-a-half-year sentence has been contested time and again by the Steenkamp family’s legal team.

Pistorius was allowed a meeting with the Steenkamps in June of last year as part of the victim-offender dialogue programme in South Africa. Instead of going to the meeting, Reeva’s mother wrote a letter to be read to Pistorius. During a tense jail visit, Barry Steenkamp claimed Pistorius broke down and “wailed like a child” when he read out the heartbreaking letter from June.
Pistorius was initially given a six-year prison term, but the prosecution appealed what they considered to be a lenient sentence. In 2017, the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa more than doubled his sentence to 13 years and five months in prison. In practice, this meant that he would be eligible for parole in 2023. However, officials are likely to take into account the Steenkamps’ most recent condemnation of their daughter’s killer.
