Tech giant Apple has obtained two patents that facilitate two-way wireless charging to its devices according to 9to5Mac. First identified by Patently Apple the drawings illustrate a MacBook charging different devices such as an iPhone, an Apple Watch and an iPad and vice versa.
The patents say that “despite having standardized connectors and cable[s], each device may require a separate or dedicated power supply to charge.”
It also states that in some cases, having individual power suppliers for each device could make it difficult to use, store and/or transport.
Other phone makers have already released such technology namely reverse wireless charging technology. Finally, Apple is catching up with its competitors as its earlier AirPower project did not live up to expectations.
Currently the company has total control of the processors in all its devices which could help remove thermal constraints, dedicated power supply challenges and help devices communicate with each other at a better level. As of now the iPhone 12 has hardware to communicate wirelessly but it has not as yet been enabled.
There are some challenges ahead as MacBooks and iPads are made of aluminum, a metal that is incompatible with wireless charging, making it a challenge as of now. However, these devices could be made with plastic, which can facilitate wireless charging.
The patents suggest that Apple is finally revisiting its failures and trying to turn them into successes.
