Raptors knock off 76ers for first win of season

Scottie Barnes scored 27 points and the Toronto Raptors defeated the visiting Philadelphia 76ers 115-107 on Friday night.

Jakob Poeltl added 19 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots for the Raptors, who have split their first two games of the season.

Jonathan Mogbo had 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Toronto, and Ochai Agbaji also had 12 points. Jamison Battle had 12 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter, and Jamal Shead added 11.

Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 28 points for the 76ers, who have lost their first two games of the season. Tyrese Maxey added 24 points, Kyle Lowry had 14, and Andre Drummond 11 and Caleb Martin scored 11 apiece. Drummond also registered nine rebounds and four steals.

Philadelphia led 31-30 after the first quarter.

Toronto used a 14-2 run to take a 50-40 lead with 6:13 to play in the second quarter, but Philadelphia cut that lead in half with 2:49 to play in the half.

Shead hit a 3-pointer with 1:21 to play to bump Toronto’s lead to eight, and the Raptors were ahead 62-56 at halftime.

Toronto shot 54.3 percent (19-for-35) in the first half while holding Philadelphia to 35.4 percent (17-for-48).

Toronto led by nine with 5:42 to play in the third quarter after Shead’s 10-footer. Philadelphia whittled the lead to four on Guerschon Yabusele’s dunk and free throw with 2:49 left in the third. He made two free throws with 2:17 left to trim the margin to two.

Toronto came back to lead 83-77 after three quarters.

Toronto led by 10 after Barnes completed a three-point play with 10:29 left in the game. The lead reached 19 on Battle’s three-point play with 7:29 to play. Battle picked up his sixth foul 13 seconds later.

Oubre’s steal led to Maxey’s layup, which cut the lead to 12 with 4:05 left. Oubre made three free throws to reduce the lead to nine with 3:38 to go, and his 3-pointer cut the lead to six with 45 seconds left.

Joel Embiid (left knee management) and Paul George (left knee bone bruise) did not play for Philadelphia.

Immanuel Quickley (right pelvic contusion), RJ Barrett (shoulder), Kelly Olynyk (back) and Bruce Brown (knee) did not play for Toronto.
