Rapper Cardi B, who is a native of the Bronx in New York City, is partnering with the office of the New York Mayor; to cover the funeral expenses of 19 victims, including children, who lost their lives in a devastating fire in the borough, recently. On Wednesday, the mayor’s office released a statement that spoke of her financial assistance towards the victims. Many small grassroots donations have also and corporate donors have poured in for them.
Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement said that the “resilience” of New York City “reflects everyday New Yorkers who never turn their back on one another.” He said that they were grateful to Cardi B as she had granted some “critical financial relief to families of the victims.”
Mayor Adams said that Cardi B was “a real superstar on and off the mic” and that they would be “forever thankful” for her assistance.
Cardi B said that she was “extremely proud to be from the Bronx.” She added that she had lots of family members and friends who lived and worked in the Bronx. She said that she knew that she had to something to help after she heard about the fire and the victims. She added that she could not imagine the “pain and anguish” that the families were experiencing after the fire.
According to the official website of City Hall, the Bronx Fire Relief Fund has raised over $2.5 million through thousands of small grassroots donations up to January 19. The Met Council, Bank of America and others have also chipped in donations and 107 households have received cash gift cards as on January 16.
On January 8, New York’s deadliest fire blazed through an apartment building in the Bronx. It left 19 dead, out of whom nine were children. There are also 32 others who are facing life-threatening injuries. Authorities said that a malfunctioning space heater caused the deadly fire.
