A rapist, who was on the run for more than 16 years, was finally caught in Northern California, according to authorities. Tuen Lee was arrested on Tuesday. More than 16 years ago, he had raped a co-worker after breaking into her home in Quincy, Massachusetts, on February 2, 2005. Although he was found guilty by a jury in 2007, he fled Massachusetts after receiving bail and before receiving the guilty verdict and has finally been arrested.
Lee was convicted of kidnapping and rape when the case went to trial at Norfolk Superior Court. Officials said that he was found guilty by the jury in September 2007. Lee was released after posting a $100,000 bail bond but left the state before he received a guilty verdict.
He had reportedly “bound, gagged, and sexually assaulted” his victim, according to the website MassMostWanted. He had allegedly raped her at knifepoint, according to Massachusetts police on social media.
Massachusetts State Police released a statement on his arrest and said that he had been “ultimately identified by DNA and his horrible breath, which produced the nickname ‘The Bad Breath Rapist.’”
Authorities have been hunting for him for more than a decade. He was also featured on an episode of the show America’s Most Wanted but eluded arrest till earlier this year. The investigators got a break when they looked into a multimillion-dollar home owned by a shop owner in California.
On Tuesday, officers watched Lee and a woman leave a multi-million dollar home in Diablo, a well-to-do community in the Bay Area. They pulled them over at a traffic stop. Initially, Lee denied his identity and provided a fake name. He admitted to his correct identity later, and his fingerprints confirmed it.
Police said his female companion was unaware of his true identity, although they had been together for 15 years in California. She owns a flower shop. He was booked at the Danville Police Department. He is expected to be transferred to Massachusetts.
Sean Lopiccolo, acting Commander of the US Marshals Service Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force, who was involved in the case, said, “Tuen Lee was on the run for more than 16 years, and the unwavering dedication by law enforcement officers to locate and arrest him hopefully brings peace of mind to the victim and her family.”
