“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” Buckingham Palace announced in an official statement on Thursday.
Queen Elizabeth 11, the longest-reigning british monarch, dies at 96. Queen Elizabeth, who ruled Britain for the longest period of time and served as its symbol for seven decades, passed away on Thursday at the age of 96, according to Buckingham Palace. The Queen passed away peacefully this afternoon at Balmoral, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace. The King and the Queen Consort will spend this evening and tomorrow in Balmoral before flying back to London.
The world’s oldest and longest-serving head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, took the throne at the age of just 25 after the death of her father King George VI on February 6, 1952.
After doctors voiced concern over her health, her family hurried to be by her side at her Scottish residence, Balmoral Castle. Since the end of last year, she had been experiencing what Buckingham Palace has referred to as “episodic mobility issues,” which had forced her to cancel almost all of her public appearances.

When her father King George VI passed away on February 6, 1952, Queen Elizabeth II, who was also the world’s oldest and longest-serving head of state, ascended to the throne at the age of barely 25.
Charles, her 73-year-old eldest son, immediately ascends to the throne of the United Kingdom and 14 other nations, including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
Queen Elizabeth has recently experienced limited mobility. In recent months, the queen has increasingly delegated tasks to Prince Charles and other royal family members due to her mobility impairments.
The queen’s most recent postponement came only days after she decided not to attend the Braemar Gathering, a prominent Highland Games event she enjoys and goes to every year, due to her ongoing health issues.
Balmoral is the Queen’s private residence which the royal family regularly use as a summer home. The monarch welcomed Liz Truss, Britain’s next prime minister, to Balmoral earlier this week, according to The Guardian.
