Russian mercenary commander Yevgeny Prigozhin, whose Wagner paramilitary group has been fighting for Russia in Ukraine, reported yesterday that his men entered Russia and took control of the country’s Southern military headquarters in the city of Rostov.

Prigozhin broadcast a lengthy video on Telegram on Friday morning, in which he argued that the invasion of Ukraine was started for little more than the vanity of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
Prigozhin has substantial public support in Russia and, even if his challenge does fall apart, this has become a moment of crisis for a military that has relied on his mercenaries in Ukraine.
According to recent surveys, he is now the fifth most recognizable politician in Russia, following Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Mishustin as Prime Minister, Sergei Lavrov as Foreign Minister, and Sergei Shoigu as Defence Minister.
He carved out a place for himself in Russian politics among traditionalists who venerate the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and are determined to triumph in the conflict in Ukraine no matter what.
