Varun Manish Chheda, a student at Purdue University with Indian ancestry, was found dead in his hostel in the US state of Indiana. According to news sources, his Korean roommate was arrested. The motive for the murder is still unknown.
Police announced on Wednesday that Indianapolis resident Chheda was discovered dead in McCutcheon Hall on the western end of the campus. According to the school’s police chief, another university student was detained on a murder accusation on Wednesday, according to NBC News, who reported the news first.
According to an affidavit, the Purdue University student who is accused of killing his roommate in their dorm room this week admitted to the police that he killed him by stabbing him. Around 12:44 in the morning, Ji Min Sha, the student, called the campus police on Tuesday, according to the document.
Varun Manish Chheda was found in a chair with “multiple stab wounds and lacerations” when police arrived at their first-floor McCutcheon Hall room, according to the affidavit. The paper states that there was “blood spatter on the wall, a pool of blood on the floor, and a folding knife on the floor.” The affidavit stated that Sha, a 22-year-old South Korean international student was held. He had what seemed to be blood on his body and clothing.
According to the affidavit, Sha admitted to the murder when he spoke with detectives. The affidavit stated that Sha acknowledged using the knife that was on the ground to kill Chheda as he was sitting in the chair where officers discovered him. Sha claimed that after killing Chheda, he dialed 911 and waited in the room until police arrived to apprehend him.
Chheda was online gaming and chatting with friends when they suddenly began to hear cries, which they mistook for the attack in the game, said Arunabh Sinha, a childhood friend of Chheda. Sinha’s pals said they heard the attack but did not know what happened that night even though they were not playing with him. They came to know of his death on Wednesday morning. The affidavit did not, however, reveal the attack’s motivation. Lesley Wiete, the chief of Purdue University Police, previously stated that she thought Chheda’s killing was “unprovoked and senseless.”
Sha appeared in court for the first time on Friday before Tippecanoe County Magistrate Sarah Wyatt in a small courtroom within the county jail. According to the Tippecanoe County Clerk’s Office, the Tippecanoe County prosecutor requested a 72-hour hold on Sha “to further examine” the event. Since the hold doesn’t apply to weekends or legal holidays like Monday, it will remain in effect until Thursday. After that, formal charges are anticipated to be brought.
