Princeton University has the oldest debating society in the nation and its members have decided to rescind a public service award that was given to Senator Rafael Edward Cruz aka Ted Cruz, who is an alumnus. The Daily Princetonian has said that the American Whig-Cliosphic Society had passed a motion 37-32 to rescind the James Madison Award for Distinguished Public Service awarded to Cruz.
Members of the society were upset at their fellow member Cruz’s baseless claims of election fraud in the 2020 elections. The Capitol riot accentuated the unhappiness of many of its members.
The final straw could have been his trip to Cancun Mexico, while Texas froze and millions across the Lone Star State were left without heat or drinking water and many died, while the Senator and family sunned themselves in warm Cancun. The senator had also flippantly said at the CPAC that Cancun was warmer than Orlando, Florida.
The society website says that the James Mason Award (JMA) constituted in 1960, is given to individuals who dedicate their lives for “the betterment of society.” Cruz’s recent actions belie this honorable sentiment and hence members thought of revoking it
According to newspaper, members of the debating society had taken the difficult decision of revoking the JMA after a 90 minute debate. While 37 members voted in favor of revoking the award, 32 voted against it and five members abstained.
The Daily Princetonian also said that the society’s board will constitute a group of trustees to decide if the award should be formally revoked. Incidentally the senator, who graduated from Princeton in 1992, was considered to be a good speaker though he has allegedly descended to flippancy and malarkey in recent times.
According to a Morning Consult poll of more than 2,000 registered voters, Ted Cruz’s rating has fallen from +6 to -5 between February 18 and 28.
Cruz was the GOP senator who led a faction of party’s objections to the Electoral College certification of the presidential elections, where Joe Biden was a clear winner, despite baseless claims of electoral fraud. Some Democrats asked him to resign after the Capitol riot, as it took place minutes after this speech on the Senate floor.
Cruz has also been in the news recently for fleeing to a luxurious resort in Cancun, along with his family, leaving their dog Snowflake behind, when Texans were facing immense hardships due to inclement weather. He had to cut short his holiday when he was chastised by many and had to return home to Texas the next day.
