Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from royal duties years ago and lost their right to police protection as they became private people. However, the prince wanted police protection for him and his family and offered to pay for it. When the offer was rejected, he filed a lawsuit and on Tuesday, the judge denied a legal review of the earlier decision.
Justice Chamberlain declared that he denied a judicial review of the claim for police protection thus sealing the fate of the former royals, and now they will have to continue to pay for private security detail when they visit the U.K.
The Duke of Sussex has compared the treatment of the security of his wife Megan Markle to that of his late mother Princess Diana. The former Princess of Wales had died due to internal injuries after a high-speed crash in 1997. She had been chased by the paparazzi in Paris. However, he and his legal team failed to convince the judge to review the protection detail denial by the Home Office in the U.K.

The U.K.’s Home Office said that the Executive Committee for Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) believed that it would be inappropriate to provide protection to “wealthy individuals” if they did not warrant such services as other wealthy individuals might “buy” protective services from specialist police officers.
The one-day court hearing took place in London, last week. According to the BBC Justice Chamberlain said that paid police services at events including “sporting or entertainment” were not similar to asking for specialist protection officers as these officers were “required to put themselves in harm’s way.”
Judge Chamberlain also noted that RAVEC’s arguments were not “irrational” as the Home Office put forth reasons why its specialist services “should not be made available for payment.”
Prince Harry has filed many lawsuits over security claims in the U.K., some of which are still to be heard by the courts.
