On Wednesday, eight years after their last visit, the Prince and Princess of Wales touched down at a U.S. city. Prince William and Princess Catherine arrived before the countdown to The Earthshot Prize Awards to be awarded to recipients, on Friday. The Prince of Wales chose Boston as the city to host the ceremony as Massachusetts is birthplace of President John F. Kennedy, who is the inspiration behind the awards.
In 2020, Prince William founded the climate change prize so that the smartest minds around the world could find solutions to tackle the environmental challenges that humans are facing, at unprecedented levels. The awards are expected to continue through the next ten years. Five winners will get £1 million, which is equivalent to $1.12 million as funds to discover creative solutions to deal with the ongoing crisis.
Prince William said that he and his wife Catherine were delighted to be in Boston and called it a hub of scientific activity as its universities, research centers and startup culture made the city a global leader in “science” and “innovation.”
On Wednesday, the royal couple managed to catch a game of the Boston Celtics against Miami Heat. The home team won the game 134-121 as Prince William and Princess Catherine were seated courtside along with Governor elect Maura Healey. The Boston Celtics extended their winning streak in front of the royal couple, by winning their fifth game.
Prince William and Princess Catherine’s three-day tour is expected to be hectic as they propose to get to know the local communities and meet indigenous leaders as well as be better informed about the challenges that the coastal city is facing due to climate change. They will not meet Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
The Earthshot Prize Awards will be broadcast to many countries across the world. Apart from the Prince and Princess of Wales, the event is expected to have a galaxy of stars who will perform or attend, some of whom include
Annie Lennox
Billie Eilish
Ellie Goulding
Rami Malek
Shailene Woodley
Catherine O’Hara and more.
