A Catholic priest is embroiled in a scandal after it was revealed that he allegedly invited two other church members to a threesome. Marko Ivan Rupnik, a close friend of Pope Francis, is thought to have invited two nuns to participate in the act, have group sex and also watch pornographic films. The allegations surfaced after one of the nuns he invited to participate reported it.
The allegation against Marko Ivan Rupnik adds to revelations of sexual antics dating back decades, all of which could cause the Pope embarrassment. 68-year-old Rupnik created mosaics depicting biblical scenes for a papal chapel at the Vatican.
The latest allegations are in addition to previous allegations of sexual misconduct dating back decades. The most recent allegation was made on Sunday in one of Rome’s newspapers by an unnamed nun who claimed Rupnik groomed her. She also claimed that in the 1980s and 1990s, Rupnik took her virginity and bullied her into silence in Slovenia.
“Father Marko started slowly and sweetly getting inside my psychological and spiritual world, exploiting my uncertainties and fragility,” the nun told the Domani newspaper.
He allegedly asked her and another nun to have sex with him, explaining that it would replicate the three-way relationship between the Holy Spirit, God, and Jesus. She also claimed that Rupnik abused “nearly 20” nuns and that her complaints were dismissed. Fans are devastated.
In response, the Jesuit order invited any victims to come forward, promising that they would be treated with empathy and understanding. It comes after the priest was accused of sexual misconduct in the 1990s in Slovenia, which came to light only recently revealed.
The priest’s order stated that the Vatican investigated Rupnik but determined that the statute of limitations applied. A statute of limitations is a law enacted by a legislative body that establishes a time limit after which legal proceedings may be initiated. Rupnik’s actions fell outside of this window, and he was not punished.
Only a few days later, the order’s leader announced that Rupnik would be excommunicated in May 2020 for using a confessional to absolve a woman with whom he had relations. Excommunication in the context of the Vatican is when someone is barred from participating in Christian church sacraments and services. Rupnik’s excommunication was lifted later that month after he repented.
