According to a schedule released by his office on Monday, US President Joe Biden plans to commemorate the second anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol with a White House ceremony.
Mr. Biden’s appearance on Friday will be a rare opportunity for him to address the ongoing issues sparked by the riot carried out by supporters of his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump.
It comes two years after a group of protesters stormed the US Capitol in opposition to Biden’s confirmation as president, just hours after former President Donald Trump delivered a speech from the Ellipse.
President Biden has condemned the riot as a threat to democracy and the rule of law, but he rarely mentions his predecessor by name in public and has framed his presidency as a means of uniting and healing the country’s partisan divides.
Incoming US House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries told MSNBC it was now up to the US Department of Justice to “follow the facts, apply the law, [and] be guided by the constitution”.
According to a tally released last month by the department, approximately 900 people have been charged with participating in the riot, and approximately 470 of those have pleaded guilty.
According to President Joe Biden’s schedule, the ceremony will take place in the White House’s East Room on Friday.
