President Joe Biden will sign an executive order requiring more gun purchases to undergo background checks. The executive order will tighten up background checks and bar unlicensed gun dealers from selling weapons.
Biden will sign the order while visiting Monterey Park, California, where he will meet with those affected by the January mass shooting that left 11 dead and 9 injured. The executive order, according to the White House, will get the United States “as near to universal background checks as possible” without new legislation.
In an effort to better structure the government to support communities affected by gun violence, Biden will order his Cabinet to develop a strategy. In ensuring that gun dealers with federal licenses understand that doing background checks is a requirement of their licensing, the plan will ask Attorney General Merrick Garland to strengthen the regulations.
Additionally, President Biden is requiring improved ballistics data reporting from federal law enforcement for a clearinghouse that enables federal, state, and local law enforcement to link shot casings to firearms. However, it is not mandatory for local and state law enforcement agencies to report ballistics data, and many do not, which reduces the effectiveness of the clearinghouse.

Daily acts of gun violence – including community violence, domestic violence, suicide, and accidental shootings – may not always make the evening news, but they too cut lives short and leave survivors and their communities with long-lasting physical and mental wounds. Instead, we must together insist that we have had enough, and that we will no longer allow the interests of the gun manufacturers to win out over the safety of our children and Nation.
