Authorities are looking into the shooting death of a pregnant woman in Artesia last week. A 25-year-old pregnant woman was shot to death in Artesia while on her way to a birthday party with her father, and her bereaved family believes it was not an accident.
On Thursday, December 29, around 7:30 p.m., a shooting occurred at the intersection of Pioneer and Artesia boulevards. The victim was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. Investigators reportedly believe the shooting was not random, but no motive has been revealed.
Marissa Perez, who was expecting her first child in June, was in the front passenger seat as her father drove to pick up a birthday cake. According to Sandra Tolentino, Perez’s mother, who spoke with Eyewitness News on Monday, a driver pulled up next to the father and daughter and started shooting. According to her mother, Marissa was shot several times, including once in the head. Investigators reportedly believe it was a ‘targeted’ killing incident.
As of Wednesday, January 4, no arrests had been announced in the case, and no individuals had been identified by law enforcement. As the search for Perez’s killer continues, the woman’s family members have come forward, urging the public to share any information that may lead to the arrest of the person who murdered their loved one.
Marissa’s aunt, April Perez, said that she had spoken to her niece just moments before the shooting. April told KTLA that Perez had called her to confirm the details of the party and that she would arrive no later than 7 p.m. Perez’s boyfriend was the first to raise an eyebrow, calling the woman’s aunt and inquiring if she had arrived at the party.
The heinous shooting occurs in the midst of what appears to be a continuing crime spree in Los Angeles. Homicides in the city have increased by 7.8% this year compared to last, with 373 cases reported. Since December 2020, the number of homicides, robberies, and assaults with violent crime has increased by 8.3% in Los Angeles.
