The Vatican has begun an investigation into how the Pope Francis’ official Instagram account “liked” a risqué photo. The photo was that of a model in a “naughty” schoolgirl inspired outfit, with high white stockings and suspenders.
When NBC News contacted the Vatican, a spokesperson said that investigations have been opened into how this could have happened. They are seeking answers from Instagram, a popular social media app.
“We are studying what happened with the help of the competent office at Instagram,” said Matteo Bruni. Bruni is the Vatican Press office’s director.
Although a team is in charge of the Pope’s account, the press office believes that the “like” was put in the account by an outside source and was visible on November 13. The Catholic News Agency reported that it was “unliked” the next day.
COY Co., the model Garibotto’s management company, immediately seized the chance to promote the model. On November 13 it said on Instagram, “COY Co. has received the POPE’S OFFICIAL BLESSING,”
On Friday morning the Pope’s official Instagram account showed that he doesn’t follow anybody. His widely popular social media account on Instagram has close to 7.5 million followers.
Garibotto, took the endorsement in her stride, both the like and the unlike, and joked on Twitter. “At least I’m going to heaven.” she said. The lingerie model has 2.4 million followers on Instagram.
