The New York Police Department has identified the woman who was set on fire in a subway train in Brooklyn, New York City last week. The woman was burned to death after an immigrant from Guatemala set her on fire using a lighter and then reportedly fanned the flames with a shirt. He also sat on a bench outside the subway car and watch the flames grow.
Police named the victim as Debrina Kawam. The 57-year old woman from New Jersey was asleep when she was set on fire. The suspect, identified as 33-year old Sebastian Zapeta randomly chose her to perform this heinous act.
Law enforcement said that 57-year old Kawam was apparently asleep on a stationary subway train when Zapeta approached her. They did not know each other.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that police officers smelled smoke at the Coney Island-Stilwell Avenue Station in Brooklyn and found the victim. She was declared dead at the scene of the fire. She was burned beyond recognition.
A grand jury charged Zapeta with four counts of murder and one count of arson including first degree murder and second degree murder. The Guatemalan native, who illegally crossed into the U.S., said that he had no recollection of the incident but was able to identify himself in photos and videos that showed the fire being lit. He said that he had been drinking at that time.
Zapeta was reportedly deported from the nation in 2018, according to immigration authorities. Subsequently he re-entered the country, and committed arson that led to death on December 22, 2025. He was reportedly living in a shelter for men in Brooklyn. The police and residents said that it housed men who had drug and alcohol problems.
People sleep in subway trains when the weather is cold and the outside temperature was 16 degrees when Debrina Kawam was killed by an arson attack.
