On Friday, a 23-year old undocumented immigrant from El Salvador was arrested for the murder of Rachel Morin, who killed while walking on a popular hiking trail, in Maryland, last year. He was identified as Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez.
He was arrested for killing a 37-year old mother of five. The suspect already has an Interpol warrant for murdering a woman in El Salvador, earlier in January 2023. The 23-year old reportedly crossed over the border to the U.S. illegally in February 2023.
In a news conference on Saturday, Hartford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said that Martinez was arrested on Friday. He has been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree rape. State Attorney Alison Healy of Hartford County will be the prosecutor on this case.
Sheriff Gahler said that the suspect was linked to known gangs in Washington D.C., as well as in Virginia and Prince George’s County.
Gahler also said, “Victor Hernandez did not come here to make a better life for himself or his family. He came here to escape the crime he committed in El Salvador. He came here and murdered Rachel and, God willing, no one else.”
He said that detectives in Tulsa, Oklahoma tracked Martin Hernandez. He was arrested in a bar on Friday night and tried to cover his identity and crimes. He is expected to be extradited to Maryland within two months.
Gahler also said that they hoped Hernandez would “never have the opportunity to walk free again.” The Hartford community is relieved and feels safer after he is in custody.
Rachel Morin had walked on the popular Ma & Pa trail in Hartford County, Maryland on Saturday, August 5, 2023, but did not return home. Instead, authorities found her body in a culvert. They say that Hernandez had hidden in a drainage ditch. He attacked her at the time she was walking on the trail. Authorities could also link her murder to a March 26 home invasion. A 9-year-old was assaulted in Los Angeles, California, during the home invasion, and DNA evidence found at the scene was linked to the Hartford Ma & Pa trail murder.
