On Thursday, police arrested a 14-year-old boy for allegedly attacking an elderly man in Midtown without provocation, according to authorities. The incident occurred on May 6 near Broadway and West 55th Street, where the teenager approached the 71-year-old man from behind and punched him in the face before pushing him to the ground. The suspect fled the scene while the victim was taken to Mount Sinai West for medical treatment.
In an effort to apprehend the assailant, the police released a photograph of the suspect standing with a clenched fist. Meanwhile, in a separate incident later in the month, a 69-year-old woman was punched on a Queens train by an unidentified man. The attack took place around 12:50 p.m. on a Manhattan-bound E train near Queens Plaza.

The perpetrator struck the victim in the head without uttering a word and exited the train at the station. The woman sustained minor injuries and was transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. Authorities are still searching for the suspect, described as a man between 30 and 40 years old, standing around 6 feet tall, with a light complexion, slim build, small face tattoo, and dark curly hair. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants, and black sneakers.
According to a report in The New York Times, violent crimes against individuals aged 65 and older, such as robbery and felony assault, increased by approximately 10% in 2022 compared to the previous year. The city has experienced an overall surge in major crimes, with rape cases more than doubling to 17 during the same period. Although incidents of grand larceny, including financial scams and credit card fraud, decreased by 6%, they still remained high at 3,780 occurrences.
These reports have instilled fear among older residents of New York City. Community leaders note that some seniors were already hesitant to return to senior centers, which were closed during the pandemic. Those who do venture out often request transportation to and from the centers to avoid walking or using public transportation.
