On Friday, police arrested a man whom they suspect is the killer of a nursing student in the Athens campus at the University of Georgia. They said that the 26-year-old man did not know the victim. He had acted alone. They also noted that there was no further threat.
Police identified Jose Antonio Ibarra as the person responsible for the death of Laken Hope Riley. The 22-year-old nursing student was found near the running trails, near the campus’s intramural fields.
Authorities gathered evidence from video from campus security as well as other technology. This led them to Ibarra. He lived in one of the apartments south of the running trails, close to where Riley’s body was found.
Police Chief Jeff Clark shared details about the evidence and arrest of the suspect. He said the authorities believed it to be a “solo act” and a “crime of opportunity.”
Clark also said that Ibarra did not have an extensive criminal history. He stated that he did not know Ibarra’s immigration status but confirmed that he was not a U.S. citizen.
Clark said that Ibarra was facing multiple charges that included
malice murder
felony murder
aggravated battery
aggravated assault
false imprisonment
kidnapping
hindering a 911 call and
concealing the death of another.
Authorities took Ibarra to the Athens-Clarke County Jail. He appeared before a judge on Saturday.
Earlier on Thursday, Riley had left for a run. Her body was found on Thursday afternoon after a friend informed the police that she had not returned from her morning run. Police officers began searching for her. Her body was found in a forested area near Lake Herrick.
Emergency medical responders found her unconscious. They were unable to resuscitate her. She reportedly died of blunt force trauma, and investigations are ongoing. However, the police confirmed that it was a homicide.
