The mother and stepfather of a missing 11-year-old girl have been arrested in North Carolina, as investigators broaden their search across land and water. The Cornelius Police Department arrested Diana Cojocari and Christopher Palmiter on Saturday for failing to report the disappearance of their 11-year-old daughter Madalina Cojocari.
Madalina was last seen in her Cornelius, North Carolina, home on November 23 but was not reported missing until December 15. Despite the fact that Madalina was last seen the day before Thanksgiving, the couple did not report her missing to a school resource officer at Bailey Middle School, where the girl attended, until December 15, according to police.
Authorities are asking for the public’s assistance and any information that can help them find the missing girl, a 6th grader who loved horses. The child was last seen in jeans, white Adidas shoes, and a white T-shirt and jacket. She is described as a white female weighing about 90 pounds, has brown eyes and brown hair.
The police department also stated on Monday that they, along with the FBI and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, are following many leads through their intense investigation to find Madalina. The department revealed that they are expanding their search area outside of the home where Madalina was last seen as part of the normal investigative process, and this now includes Lake Cornelius.
As a precaution, they are conducting additional land and water searches. Palmiter’s bond was raised to $200,000 when he appeared in court on Monday, and Cojocari is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday.
Jail records show that the couple is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
